She Wore Her Story: A Día de los Muertos Portrait of Culture, Memory & Legacy

A portrait becomes something entirely different when every detail has a story behind it. For this Día de los Muertos Catrina inspired custom photoshoot, my model didn’t simply step into a costume , she brought a piece of her own Mexican culture and childhood into the photograph. She created her own Catrina look using Lotería cards from her childhood, transforming something filled with personal memories into wearable art that honors where she comes from. To bring the vision together, makeup artist Dayna Brooke (@daynajayne22) created the beautiful Catrina, inspired makeup, adding artistry, drama, and detail that complemented the model’s handmade creation and the cultural story behind the session. Created as a custom portrait session with Yvonne Urteaga Photography in the Texas Panhandle, this photoshoot was inspired by the beauty and symbolism associated with Día de los Muertos, a tradition centered around remembering and honoring those who came before us. The result is more than a beautiful Catrina portrait.
